Who is Alperen Şengün?
Alperen Şengün is a Turkish professional basketball player born on July 25, 2002, in Giresun, Turkey. He plays as a power forward and center for the Houston Rockets in the NBA. Şengün also represents the Turkish national basketball team in international competitions.
Alperen showed great interest in sports from a young age. He started playing basketball at the age of 8, while also being involved in swimming and gymnastics. However, due to time constraints, he focused entirely on basketball. Şengün began his basketball journey in 2012 with Giresun University’s youth team, where he played until 2014.
During a youth tournament, he was discovered by Ahmet Gürgen, the head coach of Bandırma BK, and signed a youth contract with the club in 2014. With Bandırma, he won the Turkish Basketball Youth League championship and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
In 2018, he signed his first professional contract with Bandırma Kırmızı, a team competing in the Turkish Basketball League. He made his debut on October 13, 2018, against Karesispor. Over 29 games that season, he averaged 10.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
In the 2019–20 season, he was promoted to Bandırma BK’s senior team, competing in the Basketball Super League, Basketball Champions League, and Turkish Cup. After the club’s financial troubles, Şengün joined Beşiktaş in 2020.
With Beşiktaş during the 2020–21 season, Şengün delivered an outstanding performance, becoming the youngest MVP in Turkish Basketball Super League history. Following this success, he entered the 2021 NBA Draft and was selected 16th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder, then traded the same day to the Houston Rockets.
Since joining the NBA, Şengün has steadily improved, earning recognition for his exceptional passing, ball-handling, and post play. In 2024, he was named to the NBA Cup All-Tournament Team, and in 2025, he made history by becoming an NBA All-Star.
Şengün is also a key member of the Turkish national basketball team. He helped the team win a silver medal at the 2025 European Basketball Championship, where he was named to the “All-Tournament Team.”
